Thomas Tuchel declares ‘I’m not the only problem’ in response to Bayern Munich exit

Thomas Tuchel has given a cryptic verdict on Bayern Munich’s woes after it was announced that he would leave the club at the end of the season.

The Bundesliga giants are off the pace in the domestic title race and suffered a first-leg defeat in their Champions League knockout tie with Lazio in midweek.

Having suffered an embarrassing exit from the German Cup to third-tier opposition and been hammered in the German Super Cup earlier in the campaign, the very real possibility of a rare trophy-less season led to the mutual decision for Tuchel and the Bavarians to part ways.

Ahead of facing RB Leipzig on Saturday, the 50-year-old coach offered an insight into the disharmony at the club as he hinted that more needs to change at Bayern than just the manager.

He told reporters: “I never felt that we as coaching staff stopped reaching the team. But we have a discrepancy from training to matches and the coach is responsible.

“I don’t think I am the only problem but I accept my responsibility. I am not satisfied with the way we play and have been unhappy for quite some time.

“Now we have a new situation but the situation has been solved and communicated but I don’t think I am the only problem.”

Tuchel also claimed that he would let loose in how he manages Bayern between now and the end of the season, with little left to lose.

He stated: “It does not matter if I understand the decision of the club or whether I am happy with it. The only thing that matters now is that there is clarity.

“Clarity brings freedom and it is good for the matches and the training, freedom for the coach on how to act. You don’t have to think about long-term consequences of your choices. You can be a bit more reckless.”

Bayern face a crucial few weeks to save their season with Harry Kane and Co up against Leipzig and Freiburg, sat fifth and eighth in the Bundesliga respectively, before the return leg against Lazio on March 5.
