Lazio v Bayern Munich LIVE: Champions League result as Immobile wins it for hosts after Upamecano red card

Ciro Immobile scored a 69th-minute penalty to earn hosts Lazio a 1-0 victory over 10-man Bayern Munich in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash.

Immobile converted his spot-kick after Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano’s clumsy challenge on Gustav Isaksen for which the France international was sent off with a straight red card.

Disciplined Lazio stifled the German side’s attacks and Bayern were toothless throughout, failing to get a single effort on target in the match.

Bayern, who were desperate to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat by Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen, have now lost their last two matches, piling more pressure on coach Thomas Tuchel. The return leg in Munich is on March 5.

Ciro Immobile scored a 69th-minute penalty to earn hosts Lazio a 1-0 victory over 10-man Bayern Munich and further pile the pressure on the German side in their Champions League round of 16 first-leg clash.

The Bavarians, favourites going into the game, were desperate to bounce back from Saturday’s 3-0 Bundesliga loss to leaders Bayer Leverkusen which left them five points off the top.

They will return to Munich with more pressure piling on coach Thomas Tuchel and his team after their second straight defeat. They have failed score in their last two games.

And that’s it! A bit of a shock result as Bayern’s woes continue with defeat in this Champions League last-16 first leg.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:51 , Luke Baker

90+4 mins: Kimmich with a free-kick forward to Kim and De Ligt but it flicks off a Bayern head and out for a goal-kick. Into the final minute of injury-time.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:49 , Luke Baker

90+3 mins: Lazzari comes down the right for Lazio, the ball is bouncing about in the box. Kamada slips in Pedro but the shot deflects and is claimed by Neuer. That was half a chance.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:48 , Luke Baker

90+1 mins: Five minutes of injury-time in Rome.

CHANCE! Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:47 , Luke Baker

89 mins: Almost 2-0! Castellanos strides forward and slips the ball into Anderson on the right of the area. He takes a touch and shoots goalwards but it’s a brilliant block by Kim coming across to save Bayern. Should Anderson have taken that first time?

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:44 , Luke Baker

88 mins: Tel skips past a challenge down the right and it’s a decent cross but cleared behind for a corner. Provedel comes off his line to claim the cross though.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:42 , Luke Baker

85 mins: Kane strikes the free-kick but the wall does its job and deflects the ball out for a corner

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:42 , Luke Baker

84 mins: Lazio looking calm here and they’ll fancy taking a one-goal lead to Munich for the second leg.

Kane flicks the ball away from Romagnoli on the attack and draws the foul. Clever play by the forward. It’s a free-kick about 25 yards out and pretty central, just to the right of the ‘D’

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:38 , Luke Baker

80 mins: Matthijs de Ligt came on for Goretzka in the aftermath of the red card and now Eric Choupo-Moting and Mathys Tel enter the fray for Muller and Sane.

Lazio make their final two subs as Patric comes on for Gila in defence and Daichi Kamada replaces Luis Alberto in midfield.

PSG v Real Sociedad update

21:35 , Luke Baker

It’s now 2-0 to PSG against Real Sociedad as Bradley Barcola adds a second after Mbappe’s opener.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:34 , Luke Baker

77 mins: Bayern still coming forward looking for an equaliser. Musiala clips a cross-field ball to Mazraoui at the back post but he can’t quite keep it in as he tries to hook a cross to an unmarked Kane in the centre of the area.

WATCH: Immobile slams home penalty

21:32 , Luke Baker

Here’s how Ciro Immobile gave Lazio the lead from the spot.

Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich

21:31 , Luke Baker

73 mins: Wow – this whole tie has turned in that moment. Can Lazio grab a second goal while Bayern are at a man disadvantage? Kimmich was also yellow-carded for his protestation after that penalty.

Bayern come forward and Musiala wins a corner as his shot is blocked wide but it comes to nothing.

A double Lazio sub as Pedro and Taty Castellanos come on for Isaksen and Immobile.

GOAL! Lazio 1-0 Bayern Munich (Ciro Immobile 69’)

21:26 , Luke Baker

And Ciro Immobile makes no mistake from the spot. He scored his 200th Serie A goal at the weekend and bangs this penalty into the right corner, sending Neuer the wrong way.

Bayern down to 10 men and now 1-0 down. The crowd going wild at the Stadio Olimpico!

PENALTY AND RED CARD! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:25 , Luke Baker

68 mins: Anderson sprints forward and Lazio have a three on two on the counter. He should go right to Isaksen but instead goes left to Immobile.

Immobile somehow barrels through about three players, gets into the box and it falls to Isaksen again. His shot deflects wide but IT’S A PENALTY! Upamecano lunges in on Isaksen and is deemed to foul him.

It’s also a RED CARD for Upamecano! Wow! What drama

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:22 , Luke Baker

65 mins: Neat work by Bayern as Kane receives the ball to feet and then they find space down the right. A couple of neat touches in the box and Mazraoui looks like he’ll get a shot away at goal but just fouls the defender on the stretch.

Better from Bayern though.

PSG v Real Sociedad update

21:19 , Luke Baker

There’s one other last-16 tie happening this evening and Kylian Mbappe (who else!) has just given PSG a 1-0 lead over Real Sociedad approaching the hour mark.

That game is taking place in Paris, so PSG would like a second goal before they head to San Sebastian for the second leg.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:17 , Luke Baker

60 mins: Lazio left-back Elseid Hysaj has gone down injured after a knee-to-knee collision with Muller and gets some magic spray applied but sill looks in discomfort.

He’s subbed off and on comes Manuel Lazzari.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:15 , Luke Baker

59 mins: Ball lofted into the right channel where Muller chases it down, a looped cross into the box and Kane rises but his header is harmlessly over the top. The England skipper had to generate all the power himself there. Half-chance at best.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:12 , Luke Baker

55 mins: Sane twists and turns looking for space about 35 yards out but he’s swamped by light blue shirts. Bayern’s frustration building here and errors are starting to creep into their passing especially.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:09 , Luke Baker

52 mins: Bayern need to settle in this second half. They have a spell of possession but it’s side to side, fairly harmless and Lazio hold firm.

But Lazio give the ball away, it’s fizzed low across the face of goal by Gortezka and Musiala slides in but it’s blocked behind for a corner. MAzraoui’s shoot from that corner is charged down

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:07 , Luke Baker

50 mins: Now Lazio win a corner. Ball crossed in towards Guendouzi, it comes off Kima nd it’s another Lazio corner…

This time, Kane can head clear for Bayern. Great start to the half by Lazio

SAVE! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:05 , Luke Baker

48 mins: The best chance of match for either side so far and it should be 1-0 Lazio!

Luis Alberto pinched the ball in midfield, turns Upamecano and clips it over the top for Isaksen. He’s alone in the penalty area but Neuer rushes out, makes himself big and saves one-on-one. Great save! Isaksen got the ball stuck between his feet slightly but Neuer bailed Bayern out there.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:04 , Luke Baker

47 mins: Anderson penalised for clipping the back of Kimmich and it’s a fairly clear foul, although Anderson disagrees, naturally.

But most of the early play in his second 45 minutes is taking place in the Bayern half.

KICK-OFF! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

21:02 , Luke Baker

Back underway in Rome. Can Bayern grab an all-important goal or will the pressure continue to build on Thomas Tuchel?

HALF-TIME! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:49 , Luke Baker

And there’s no injury-time, so that’s half-time in Rome. A frustrating 45 minutes for Bayern, who again lack cutting edge in attack. Perhaps they haven’t shaken off the disappointment of the weekend yet?

A few decent chances but Kane and Kimmich fired over early on and Sane’s free-kick whistled narrowly wide. Lazio will be pleased enough at keeping it 0-0 so far

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:46 , Luke Baker

45 mins: Guendouzi strides forward, Bayern back off and once he reaches the edge of the box he fires at goal but it’s blocked will by Kim Min-jae.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:44 , Luke Baker

42 mins: First half-chance of the night for Lazio’s record scorer Ciro Immobile. Good work again by Isaksen and he fires the ball across but Immobile can’t get a good connection. It was slightly behind him, otherwise that could have been the opening goal.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:43 , Luke Baker

40 mins: Almost disaster for Lazio as goalkeeper Provedel passes straight to Muller and his first-time ball through finds Kane in the box but the shot is blocked and Lazio survive. Then the flag goes up anyway to spare Lazio as Kane was marginally offside.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:39 , Luke Baker

38 mins: Isakson cuts inside from the right and curls a shot at goal but it’s comfortably over the top. Better from Lazio though.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:38 , Luke Baker

37 mins: Musiala is so dangerous every time he gets on the ball. He runs straight at Lazio’s defence again, races to the by-line and cuts the ball back but Lazio scramble clear.

Just before that, Muller put in a cross from the right but it was just an inch too high for the leaping Kane – it brushed the top of his head.

CLOSE! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:33 , Luke Baker

31 mins: But it’s a clever routine instead. Kane dummies it, Musiala lays off to Muller who puts his foot on it and Sane strikes at goal but it flies inches wide of the left post. Not far away at all!

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:32 , Luke Baker

30 mins: A free-kick right on the edge of the ‘D’ for Bayern. Kane fancies this and is lining it up…

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:29 , Luke Baker

27 mins: Lazio have calmed things down and taken the sting out of Bayern over the past few minutes.

Mazraoui gets into the box cutting in from the right but has the ball nicked away before Bayern fans howl for a foul on Goretzka but the referee is unmoved.

CLOSE! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:24 , Luke Baker

22 mins: The closest Lazio have come. Cataldi plays a nice ball inside to Luis Alberto who fires at goal from 25 yards. It’s not too far away but flies wide with Neuer scrambling. The keeper may have had it covered, in all fairness.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:22 , Luke Baker

21 mins: Lovely link-up play between Sane and Muller down the right. But Anderson breaks the play up really well and it gets a huge cheer from the home fans. The ex-West Ham winger has been superb in his defensive duties so far tonight.

Lazio then have a spell of possession in the Bayern half as they grow in confidence. The Munich defensive line holds though and forces the Italians back.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:20 , Luke Baker

18 mins: Lazio win a corner and set-pieces may be a good way to exploit Bayern. Romagnoli up from the back but the cross is too close to Neuer, who claims comfortably.

Musiala then charges away on the counter – he’s such a strong runner. Gila in pursuit and Musiala goes down in the box but it’s determined to be a fair contest, just good strength from the Lazio centre-back

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:16 , Luke Baker

15 mins: Good noise from the Lazio fans, they’re creating a classic, partisan European atmosphere. Their side look like being on the back foot for most of this game, so they’ll need all the help they can get.

Anderson gets back and nips the ball away from Sane in the Lazio box. Bayern continually getting in great positions.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:14 , Luke Baker

13 mins: Sane chases a ball into the right channel but Romagnoli is across well to block the Bayern star and shield the ball out for a goal-kick.

All Bayern so far, as you might expect, but the Lazio defence holding strong at the moment.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:11 , Luke Baker

10 mins: Good block by Isaksen to cut out a Guerreiro pass down the left and it’s out for a throw. Musiala then runs at Marusic, gets into the box and fires a shot at goal that’s blocked out for a corner. Musiala looked sharp there though.

Decent corner into the six-yard box, half headed away by Lazio but the follow-up shot from Mazraoui trickles harmlessly wide

CHANCE! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:08 , Luke Baker

7 mins: Good ball floated to the back post by Sane, Muller keeps it in and hooks it back into the centre of the box where Kane has a great chance but hooks the ball well over.

For a striker of his quality, that was a real chance and he looks baffled that he put it so far over.

Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:06 , Luke Baker

5 mins: Bayern already dominating possession and stroking the ball about nicely. But a neat touch from Guendouzi in the Lazio midfield gives Isaksen space to run and he is hacked down by Goretzka.

A free-kick about 25 yards out to the right of the box. Poor ball in though and Bayern hack clear

CHANCE! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:04 , Luke Baker

2 mins: A late change to Lazio’s starting line-up, by the way. Matias Vecino was injured in warm-ups, so Danilo Cataldi comes into central midfield for the Italians

A couple of early touches for Neuer in the Bayern goal before they attack. Space for Sane down the right, he gets into the box, cuts it back for Kimmich but his shot from the edge of the area is a long way wide. That was a chance, you know.

KICK-OFF! Lazio 0-0 Bayern Munich

20:01 , Luke Baker

Underway in Rome. Can Lazio catch Bayern cold?

Lazio v Bayern Munich

19:59 , Luke Baker

Here’s what Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri had to say ahead of the fixture.

“It will be a very difficult match, but we must approach it knowing a win is not impossible. Bayern are favourites, they are always strong in the Champions League, and we will need to play with confidence and hold our nerve. When the need arises, we will all have to suffer together.

“We must not forget that we play to have fun. We need to rediscover the sense of fun on the pitch, despite all the responsibilities we have to assume. If the child who loved playing football dies, the man also has less fun.”

Harry Kane confident of winning silverware at Bayern Munich before Euro 2024 bid

19:40 , Luke Baker

Harry Kane is confident he will win silverware with Bayern Munich this season before trying to lead England to Euro 2024 glory in Germany.

The 30-year-old is blazing a trail in the Bundesliga following his summer move from Tottenham, scoring 28 goals in his first 27 games as Bayern are locked in a title race with Bayer Leverkusen and also in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

He hopes his goals continue Bayern’s domination of German football before aiming for more glory in his new homeland with England in the European Championship.

“I’m feeling confident,” he told the PA news agency. “Bayern Munich have been winning their league for the last 11 years or so and also won the Champions League a few years ago, there’s an expectation to be winning every trophy that we’re in.

“The focus is to win both tournaments.”

Manchester City bring reminder of why they’re European champions with classy display against Copenhagen

19:30 , Luke Baker

Manchester City resumed their Champions League defence with a comfortable 3-1 win at FC Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva netted either side of an unexpected Magnus Mattsson equaliser as City dominated a last-16 first leg they could have won far more convincingly.

Pep Guardiola’s side dominated in every aspect at the Danish capital’s famously atmospheric Parken Stadium and Phil Foden completed a deserved success late on.

With close to 80 per cent possession, the holders were hardly troubled and will be confident of wrapping up a place in the quarter-finals when the sides meet again in Manchester in three weeks.

Bayer Leverkusen stun Bayern Munich to take charge of Bundesliga title race

19:19 , Luke Baker

Bayer Leverkusen celebrated carnival weekend in the Rhineland with a superb 3-0 win over Bayern Munich which sent them five points clear of their opponents at the top of the Bundesliga.

Josip Stanisic, the man on loan from Bayern, opened the scoring against a static defence in the 18th minute before Alex Grimaldo doubled the lead five minutes into the second half.

An exclamation point was added in stoppage time when Manuel Neuer came up for a corner and missed the ball, with Jeremie Frimpong firing into an empty net.

Now Bayern will look to bounce back from that harrowing loss against Lazio this evening.

Predictable Champions League has lost its magic —and now faces an uncertain future

19:14 , Luke Baker

As the players return for the Champions League knockouts this week, there’s a question being discussed by their bosses that is more engaging than who might win the competition. The latter, after all, feels even more predictable than last season.

That is why club executives have recently been talking about the potential fallout of December’s European Super League decision and exploring one potential consequence. If someone went to Uefa and came up with a competition that raised half the prize money but guaranteed historic mid-tier clubs such as Celtic, Benfica and PSV Eindhoven had a better chance of winning it, would they take the leap? Should that not be what they are looking to do now?

The latter is something the European Court of Justice ruling essentially implies, since any such challenge would involve Uefa having to do an economic analysis to show their competition benefits the wider European game. That is something that has never been properly done, but a mere glance across this season’s last-16 ties indicates its outcome would be uncertain; maybe more uncertain than many of the matches.

On the pitch, the knockout stages of the Champions League appear to be more predictable than ever – but off it, the future of European football’s premier competition looks unclear, explains Chief Football Writer Miguel Delaney:

Predictable Champions League has lost its magic —and now faces an uncertain future

Lazio v Bayern Munich team news

19:07 , Luke Baker

Here’s how we expect both teams to line up this evening.

Gustav Isaken, Ciro Immobile and Felipe Anderson will be charged with breaching the Bayern defence but can Lazio cope defensively? There’ll be big pressure on full-backs Adam Marusic and Elseid Hysaj to cope with a marauding Leroy Sane and Jamal Musiala.

England captain Harry Kane leads the line for Bayern with Thomas Muller likely to drop in behind. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka will patrol the midfield in front of a back four that includes Kim Minjae following his return from the Asian Cup.

Lazio XI: Provedel; Marusic, Romagnoli, Gila, Hysaj; Guendouzi, Vecino, Alberto; Isaksen, Immobile, Anderson

Bayern Munich XI: Neuer; Mazraoui, Upamecano, Kim, Guerreiro; Kimmich, Goretzka; Sane, Muller, Musiala; Kane

What Bayern Munich and PSG’s common goal tells us about the state of the Champions League

18:55 , Luke Baker

Sometimes opposites can have the most in common. Bayern Munich are European aristocracy, six-time champions of the continent, a dynastic club. Paris Saint-Germain are the nouveaux riches, paying prices Bayern long considered obscene and yet never winning the Champions League. They are Qatari-owned, Bayern Bavarian to their core, even ending their much-criticised sponsorship deal with Qatar Airways.

And yet they are also inextricably linked, sharing a particular position. A Champions League campaign can define anyone’s season and, in various ways, Europe has become central to the identity of clubs as different as Real Madrid and Manchester City; but arguably Champions League campaigns define every season at Bayern and PSG more than anywhere else.

Lazio vs Bayern Munich betting tips: Champions League predictions, odds and free bets

18:40 , Luke Baker

If the pressure wasn’t on Bayern Munich to make a deep run in the Champions League before the start of the season, it almost certainly is now with their Bundesliga title defence in tatters.

The Bavarians produced one of their worst performances in recent memory in a 3-0 loss to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen, leaving Thomas Tuchel’s men five points adrift of first place.

Leverkusen are now 1/2 with football betting sites to end Bayern’s 11-year run as champions and having already gone out of the DFB Pokal, the Champions League looks to be Bayern’s best shot at silverware this season.

UK bookmakers have faith they can bounce back from the Leverkusen lashing when they go to Rome, making them strong favourites to win the first leg of the last-16 tie against Lazio (8pm, TNT Sports 1).

Bayern Munich travel to Lazio in the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 on Tuesday.

The Bavarian club have been utterly dominant in Germany in recent matches, but were left short at the weekend as league leaders Bayer Leverkusen extended their points advantage at the top of the table to five. Bayern only managed one shot on target, the first time that has happened in eight years.

Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane was also kept quiet in the clash, in an otherwise prolific season where he has scored 28 goals and provided eight assists in all competitions. He also scored four goals in six Champions League matches.

Bayern finished top of their Champions League group, while Lazio finished second, four points behind Atletico Madrid.
