Vote for Week 6 Athlete of the Week


The season is getting closer and closer to the end, and Gardner area teams are working to get in some big wins in the final weeks of the regular season. There was no shortage of that in Week 6 as athletes continue to show the high level of competition in the Gardner area.

Last week, readers voted Gael Vera as The Gardner News Athlete of the Week. Vera scored four goals in Oakmont boys soccer’s 7-4 victory over Wachusett on Thursday, Oct. 5. He received 50.55% – 460 votes. The Gardner cross country program came in second, with 31.32% of the votes for its consistent top place finishes, remaining undefeated thus far.

Field Hockey

Haylie Mahoney continues to be a leading scorer for Monty Tech. Mahoney scored a goal in the Bulldogs’ 2-0 win over Valley Tech, and another in Monty Tech’s 3-0 win against North Brookfield.

Quabbin tied 3-3 with Westborough. Annabelle Magill, Makenzie Casey and Kylie Casey scored goals in the game. Magill has had a great impact on the field, offering scoring abilities as well as assisting this season.

Boys Soccer

Gardner grabbed several wins this past week – 5-2 over Littleton and 4-0 over Clinton. Ricky Ruiz scored five goals in the two games, helping to lead the Wildcats to two victories in the week.

Girls Soccer

Lily Mom-Uch scored twice in Monty Tech’s win against Abby Kelley. Assists came from Caroline Ferguson and Cassidy Boutell.

Narragansett stuck out a tough 3-2 win over Fitchburg. Abgail Billiel notched two goals in the victory, and Emily Kilbury tallied the other.

Boys Golf

Tommy Pendergast of Oakmont helped the Spartans to get a victory over Fitchburg in match play, 51-3. Pendergast shot a 39 in the match.
