Premier League result and reaction from four-goal thriller

Tottenham captain Son Heung-min’s brace earned his side a 2-2 draw at Arsenal in the Premier League as the visitors twice came from behind in an absorbing derby on Sunday.

Cristian Romero’s own goal after 26 minutes handed Arsenal the lead but Son equalised shortly before halftime as the visitors grew into the game.

Romero then conceded a penalty that was converted by Bukayo Saka in the 54th minute but Tottenham hit back almost immediately as Son punished a terrible mistake by Arsenal substitute Jorginho.

Both sides had chances to take maximum points with Son close to a hat-trick for Tottenham and Saka having a shot saved. Ten minutes of stoppage time could not separate the sides as the draw ensured both remain undefeated in the league this season with 14 points from six games.

Ange Postecoglou has already transformed Tottenham with Arsenal comeback

16:37 , Ben Fleming

All square at Arsenal, with one side much happier about it. Everyone else would at least have been greatly entertained by it.

This was yet another north London derby that swung back and forth in such absorbing fashion to add to its archive of classic games but, once it settled into a 2-2 draw, it was Tottenham celebrating more.

They have been given huge encouragement for the future, after displaying adventure and resilience in a match many might not have considered them quite ready for.

That is the effect of Ange Postecoglou, which was all the more impressive given how Arsenal had posed the most testing questions for the first half-hour. Mikel Arteta’s side, however, might again be feeling the effects of a title race with Manchester City.

FULL-TIME: Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

16:29 , Ben Fleming

Arsenal and Tottenham remain unbeaten in the Premier League after playing out a breathless 2-2 draw in the Premier League, with Son Heung-min scoring twice to rescue a point for the visitors.

The Gunners were well on top in the opening stages and took a deserved lead when Bukayo Saka’s strike deflected in off Cristian Romero, but Ange Postecoglou’s side responded impressively at the Emirates.

Son equalised when he steered in James Maddison’s cut-back and although Saka restored Arsenal’s lead from the penalty spot when Romero was judged to have handled in the box, the Spurs forward hit back within two minutes when Jorginho was robbed.

Mikel Arteta provides Declan Rice injury update after ‘strange’ half-time change

17:33 , Ben Fleming

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta revealed that Declan Rice was suffering from discomfort with his back prior to his substitution at half-time during the 2-2 draw with rivals Tottenham.

To compound Arsenal’s disappointing result, the home side also had to deal with an injury to record summer signing Rice, who made way at the break, with Arteta revealing the nature of the injury after the game.

More from Postecoglou

17:00 , Ben Fleming

“The most pleasing thing for me is they’ve made a good environment every day and they want to follow what we’re providing them in information.

“When you get that belief was the playing group, you excel. But it’s a long way to go. The start is still the start for me. I’m happy the players want to be this kind of football team.

“We’re not going to dominate Arsenal for 90 minutes, no chance. We just kept playing, didn’t get flustered and lose belief. That’s a good sign as we’ve got challenges for sure. There are more obstacles we need to overcome to become the team we want to be.

“I don’t have a schedule, so I don’t worry about it. Wherever we are is a good place to go further. I’m not saying it’s going to take a while but the undeniable fact is we’re six games in. How many players in the past have started in a London derby? One or two probably. We’ve had an encouraging start.”

Ange Postecoglou now talking at his post-match press conference:

16:58 , Ben Fleming

“Real pleased. They’re a top side, a tough place to come. Not much went our way today with an unlucky own goal and an unlucky penalty.

“The character, the belief the team showed, it’s the team we want to be. They kept persevering and persevering.

“There’s a will and desire to become the team we want to be which is making sure you’re disciplined and buying into the team values.

“It was Micky [van der Ven], Udogie, Porro, their first derby. Super proud of the experienced guys in there. Romero was outstanding, Bissouam brilliant all season and Sonny, his goals and work rate were phenomenal.”

Ange Postecoglou speaking to Sky Sports after the game

16:56 , Ben Fleming

“Performance-wise We had to show everything we’ve got. They are a top team. We had to defend at times but we showed real courage and bravery to keep playing our football and press aggressively.

“We were a bit unfortunate with both of the goals but great character to come from behind twice at a difficult place.”

On his side’s response after conceding: “Brilliant. That’s three away games at difficult venues that we’ve gone behind but a great response. They are a top team here at home and so far this side is growing – the football is still at the beginning – but so impressed with the character they are showing already as a group.”

Mikel Arteta speaking in his press conference

16:45 , Ben Fleming

“We are disappointed not to get the three points that’s for sure. Especially when you go in front twice, especially the moments when we conceded and we could have scored 2-0 with Gabriel Jesus.

“The second goal affected the team emotionally and it became a transitional game, which is a risk if you play against them. Then we lacked the quality in the final third.

“The energy the boys put in, the attitude was phenomenal. But we lacked composure on the ball against a really good Spurs side.

“Credit to them, they have the quality and chances to do that. We have simple giveaways and we didn’t do enough in certain areas to spread out in certain areas.”

On Rice’s injury: “He had a back injury. We have to assess him. It’s strange for someone like him to come off.”

A point each.

Maddison speaking to Sky Sports after the game

16:26 , Ben Fleming

On his injury: “I just had a little moment where I tackled Jorginho where jolted my knee a little bit. You don’t want to play playing in a derby when you are not 100 per cent as it could cost the team so I had to come off for the last period.

On the performance: “I thought the lads were brilliant. We dug deep and showed quality. 2-2 may be a fair result in the end but we left everything out there and we can’t ask any more other than that.

“We responded brilliantly to going down. Heads can drop and momentum can shift when you concede a goal like that but we kept playing. Even in the early stages, we gave the ball away in some difficult areas but like we said bravery is to keep wanting the ball and playing our way even if mistakes happen and we did that for large parts and dominated the ball. All in all, a draw and we’ll walk away happy.”

Son speaking to Sky Sports after the game

16:20 , Ben Fleming

“It’s always a tough game but I think the performance was fantastic from the first whistle until the last whistle. We gave everything so I hope the fans can be proud. Obviously, we want to win but I think performance-wise we can be proud.

On the penalty: “The referee made a decision and we can’t argue with that. It’s always an emotional game but we accepted the decision and bounced back really strongly.”

FULL-TIME: Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

16:11 , Ben Fleming

Here’s a look at the two second-half goals. First, Saka’s penalty that put Arsenal briefly back ahead.

But it wouldn’t last long as Son struck back right away.

FULL-TIME: Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

16:01 , Ben Fleming

The corner comes to nothing and there’s the full-time whistle. It ends 2-2 with the second half’s action coming in a frantic two-minute period. Saka had Arsenal back ahead from the spot after Romero’s handball but Postecoglou’s side hit back just a minute later as Son equalised again for the visitors.

No real chances for either side after that and the spoils are shared in the first north London derby of the season.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

16:01 , Ben Fleming

90+10 mins: But now Spurs break. Udogie glides through the middle of the park before releasing Kulusevski on the right. It’s cut back to Richarlison whose effort is deflected wide.

A late corner.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:55 , Ben Fleming

90+4 mins: Porro almost gets Spurs in a spot of bother as the full-back gives it away at the back but its superb work from Bissouma to outmuscle Havertz and win a goal-kick for his side.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:53 , Ben Fleming

90+2 mins: Van de Ven gets in a pickle as he slices the ball out from a corner. The initial cross is cleared but Saka forces a good save from Vicario as his low strike – through a crowd of players – almost finds the far corner.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

90 mins: Saka is now down in a heap on the ground after a tangle with Udogie. The forward looks like he’s okay to continue as we head into the first of TEN minutes of added time…

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:48 , Ben Fleming

87 mins: Was that the moment for Havertz? He’s struggled since his summer move and the German’s eyes must have lit up as the ball bounced to him on the edge of the box.

Not to be, however, as he lashes his half-volley over the bar.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:46 , Ben Fleming

CLOSE! 85 mins: Nearly from the corner for Arsenal as a flick-on at the near post bounces across the face of the goal with Nketiah unable to get in fast enough at the back post to divert it on target.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:45 , Ben Fleming

85 mins: The first real sighting of Nelson since his introduction off the bench. The winger jinks inside onto his right foot but his effort is deflected over the bar for a corner.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:42 , Ben Fleming

81 mins: A portion of respite for both sides after those changes. As if readying themselves for a final push in the last few minutes.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:37 , Ben Fleming

78 mins: It feels like there’s a winner in his game. White’s cross is poor and Vicario gathers the ball but it’s end-to-end stuff at the minute.

A change now for both sides. Nelson on for Jesus for the hosts, while Richarlison and Hojbjerg are introduced by the visitors, with Son and Maddison making way.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:35 , Ben Fleming

74 mins: And Spurs now break up the pitch. Porro has space on the right and looks to whip in a ball with Son waiting expectantly in the box. Zinchenko recovers well, though, and it’s out for a corner.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:34 , Ben Fleming

73 mins: A corner for Arsenal which Odegaard whips in from the left. Jesus competes at the near post but it’s eventually gathered by Vicario.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

71 mins: Maddison is back on the pitch and appears to be running freely again. A good sign for every Spurs fan watching.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:31 , Ben Fleming

69 mins: Son fires into the side netting from a tight angle but there’s concern now for Maddison after his leg appeared to get caught in the surface after a challenge with Havertz.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:28 , Ben Fleming

67 mins: A yellow for Nketiah as the Arsenal forward lunges in very late on Vicario as the Spurs keeper slightly miscontrols the ball.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:27 , Ben Fleming

66 mins: Spurs continue to look bright and positive in the final third, perhaps more so than their opposition, as Kulusevski wins a free-kick in a promising position out on the right.

It’s whipped in by Maddison but cleared away by the Arsenal defence.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:23 , Ben Fleming

63 mins: An enforced change for Spurs as Johnson looks like he’s injured himself tracking back. Solomon comes on to replace the Welshman out on the left wing.

Shortly after, Maddison tries his luck from the edge of the box but it’s blazed well over the bar.

Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham

15:22 , Ben Fleming

60 mins: The game slows down – ever so slightly – after those chaotic few minutes. What a response from Spurs having gone behind again in unfortunate circumstances and what a final half an hour we know have.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-2 Tottenham (Son, ‘55)

15:16 , Ben Fleming

Less than a minute and Spurs are level right from kick-off!

Jorginho loses the ball straight away and Spurs are through with Maddison. The midfielder draws the Arsenal defence before sliding in Son who makes no mistake with a cool finish across the keeper and into the bottom corner.

It’s the fixture that just keeps on giving.

GOAL! Arsenal 2-1 Tottenham (Saka, ‘54)

15:14 , Ben Fleming

Saka steps up and fires home! Vicario goes to his right but it’s clipped down the middle. Arsenal lead once again.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

15:13 , Ben Fleming

PENALTY! Robert Jones takes a look and points to the spot! There wasn’t much Romero could do but it matters not. An own goal in the first half and now the Argentine has conceded a penalty early in the second.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

15:12 , Ben Fleming

50 mins: PENALTY APPEAL! The ball bounces in the area from the corner and White swings a boot at it. The effort is deflected away but there are furious appeals from the Arsenal players.

Replays show it hit Romero’s hand, although the Argentine was very close to White when the ball was struck.

VAR has a look and the ref now heads to the monitor.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

15:09 , Ben Fleming

49 mins: It’s given away cheaply by Arsenal in defence as Johnson gets the chance to break up the left. The Welsh forward eventually runs out of options, though, as Saliba makes the tackle.

KICK-OFF! Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

15:06 , Ben Fleming

Back under way in the second half after those changes. Could Rice’s absence boost Spurs hopes?

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

15:05 , Ben Fleming

A double change at the break for Arsenal. Vieira comes on for Havertz and, surprisingly, Rice makes way for Jorginho.

Perhaps a slight injury for the Englishman?

HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

14:57 , Ben Fleming

A fiery and frenetic first half:

HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

14:55 , Ben Fleming

Here are a look at the two goals from the first half. First up, Romero’s unfortunate own goal:

But Spurs equalised late on in the half through Son’s strike:

HALF-TIME: Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

14:52 , Ben Fleming

Level it is. A frenetic first half which is hardly unusual for this fixture. A goal each as Son’s strike cancelled out Romero’s earlier own goal.

Chances at both ends, with Vicario denying Nketiah before Raya superbly kept out Johnson’s strike, and it’s all to play for after the break.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

14:49 , Ben Fleming

45+4 mins: Rice tries his luck from range but ballons it well over the break. Looks like we’ll be heading to the break all square.

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

14:47 , Ben Fleming

45+1 mins: Four minutes of added time as Sarr goes into the book for a cynical foul on Jesus. Bissouma is also carded for dissent.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham (Son, ‘42)

14:42 , Ben Fleming

Raya can’t keep this one out! Spurs are level and it’s the captain Son. The Arsenal keeper does well to deny Johnson again, initially, but play is recycled through Maddison, who does superbly to beat Saka and get to the byline.

The England midfielder fires it low into the box and Son is on hand to sweep it in off the far post. The Emirates is silenced but what a response from Postecoglo’s side.

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham

14:39 , Ben Fleming

SAVE! Well, maybe that is why Raya is the new number one! What a superb stop from the Spaniard to deny Johnson. It’s a well-worked move from Spurs down the right and Johnson must have thought he’d scored as he diverted the cross on target.

But, somehow, Raya palms away the ball as he scampers back across to his right – it looked behind him!

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham

14:37 , Ben Fleming

37 mins: Odegaard tries his luck from range but the Arsenal captain’s strike is comfortable enough for Vicario who holds on to the strike.

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham

14:34 , Ben Fleming

32 mins: Ooh, Madison is a lucky man! The Spurs midfielder is dispossessed on the edge of his own box by Jesus, who rifles a shot over the bar. The whistle had gone for a foul but it’s another warning for Spurs who have been fortunate at times when passing the ball around the back.

Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham

14:31 , Ben Fleming

30 mins: Arsenal with a spring in their step after that first goal. Vieira is afforded far too much space out on the left and clips a ball towards the far post looking for Jesus. The Brazilian is lurking with intent but Van de Ven recovers just in time to divert the ball behind for a corner.

GOAL! Arsenal 1-0 Tottenham (‘26, Romero own goal)

14:26 , Ben Fleming

26 mins: A terrible goal to concede for the visitors. Saka is one-on-one against Udogie and is welcome inside onto his left. The forward fires the ball towards the far post but it ends up in the Spurs goal via a huge deflection of the outstretched leg of Romero.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:25 , Ben Fleming

25 mins: Maddison with a free-kick centrally which he floats in towards Romero. the loose ball lands at Sarr’s feet and the central midfielder is now 0-2 for long-range efforts as he slices the ball high into the sky and backwards from the left edge of the box.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:24 , Ben Fleming

23 mins: Spurs continue to welcome on waves of pressure from those in red as we reach the halfway point in the first half. Still they persist with their ball-playing style.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:20 , Ben Fleming

18 mins: Spurs threaten up the other end as Porro fires a low, thumping ball across the six-yard box. Arsenal clear before Sarr fires over from the edge of the box.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:17 , Ben Fleming

CLOSE! 16 mins: Not a great couple of minutes for Udogie as the full-back miscues a back pass behind Van de Ven. Nketiah latches onto the loose ball inside the area but fires straight at Vicario from a tight angle.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:16 , Ben Fleming

15 mins: Not a great sign for Spurs fans. Udogie is shown an early yellow after a late challenge on Saka. The Arsenal forward should relish the prospect of going up against the booked full-back for the rest of the game.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:15 , Ben Fleming

SAVE! 14 mins: Arsenal’s first shot of the game, and it’s a great save from Vicario to keep the scores level. Saka clips a ball to the back post where Jesus has arrived unmarked.

The Brazilian tries to aim his effort back across goal but Vicario is equal to it and tips it wide of the goal.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:13 , Ben Fleming

12 mins: Little goalmouth action so far for either team, with Spurs seeing more of the ball – 60 per cent to be precise – through the opening dozen minutes.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:09 , Ben Fleming

9 mins: Spurs make a bit of a meal out of their latest attempt to play out from the back. Arsenal win the ball high up the pitch and eventually draw the foul out wide on the right. Odeggard swings it in but the visitors deal with the threat.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:06 , Ben Fleming

6 mins: Saka gets his first touches of the game but Udogie does well to cramp the forward for room. Odegaard tries a cute backheel but Spurs intercept and clear.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:04 , Ben Fleming

3 mins: OFFSIDE! Bissouma’s shot from the edge of the box is turned home by Son, but the Spurs’ captain doesn’t celebrate, knowing he’s comfortably offside.

Arsenal 0-0 Tottenham

14:03 , Ben Fleming

3 mins: As expected, Spurs will still try to play their own way but Arsenal are hot on their heels with the press. The visitors do make their way up the pitch, though, as Johnson’s effort is deflected behind for the game’s first corner.

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Kick-off approaching

Just under ten minutes until kick-off at the Emirates. A few changes for both sides and a number of north London derby debuts. Who will have the telling contribution today for their side?

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Johnson starts for Spurs

13:44 , Jamie Braidwood

Ange Postecoglou on why he has handed Brennan Johnson his first Tottenham start: “Looking at the context of the game and what we may need today. Brennan has trained well and his pace will add another dimension to our game.

“A good performance is the key. You want to know how you are going to go against one of the best teams in the league. It is about our performance. I am looking forward to it. I have had a lot of firsts this season and this is anther one. It’s why we do what we do.”

Pre-match stats

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Arteta on ‘new challenge’ of facing Spurs

13:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta on facing Ange Postecoglou for the first time: “For sure they’ve had a really good start and they are in a good moment and we are too so it’s a big game and we’re going to have to battle the right way to win it,” he added.

“They dominate the games, they win the games, they score a lot of goals and they’re an attacking flowing team and they go for it so they’ll bring a different approach to the game than what we’ve played in the league so far.

“They have a new challenge, a new opportunity, they have a new manager who is doing really well and he’s managed to change the vibe around the club and with a different style too.

“So we need to be ourselves and produce the performance to beat them.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Trossard misses out for Gunners

13:23 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta explains Leandro Trossard absence: “He felt a muscle in training and he wasn’t fit. We have to see the extent of that injury but he wasn’t fit for today. Somebody has to come and fill that gap. You have to adapt to it and give opportunities to the other players and step in.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Postecoglou reveals respect for Arteta

13:14 , Jamie Braidwood

Ange Postecoglou on facing Mikel Arteta: “In terms of similarities, I’m 58, he’s whatever (41). I’ve had 26 years, he’s five years into it. He’s managed in one country, I’ve managed in a few. I’m not sure how he’s got a great head of hair!

“He’s a lot fitter than I am. I don’t know, there’s not a lot of threads I can sort of join between us. I wouldn’t say we’re opposites.

“We’re different. Even in the way his team plays. Yes he does have a very attacking philosophy but it’s different from mine and that’s the beauty of the game. That’s what you love about it.

“It’s why you can’t copy. If you’re an artist and you see a Picasso, yeah you can copy it, but it’s not going to be a Picasso is it? It’s the same with football.

“You can see that somebody does something really well, but don’t bring your own personality into it. I have great admiration for the way he’s gone about things and how he’s stuck to his beliefs. It’s a credit to him.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Team news!

13:05 , Jamie Braidwood

David Raya retains his place in goal for Arsenal, and there is big team news elsewhere too.

Eddie Nketiah starts alongside Gabriel Jesus, with Leandro Trossard missing out due to a minor injury. Fabio Vieira starts ahead of Kai Havertz in midfield.

Tottenham made one change from last weekend’s dramatic victory over Sheffield United with Brennan Johnson handed his full debut.

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Raya or Ramsdale for No 1?

12:47 , Jamie Braidwood

David Raya or Aaron Ramsdale? That’s the big decision facing Mikel Arteta once again, as the battle for the No 1 jersey at Arsenal takes shape.

Raya has started Arsenal’s past two matches and a third consecutive start would suggest that the Spaniard has moved ahead of Ramsdale in Arteta’s plans.

And the goalkeeper backed himself after keeping his second straight clean sheet in Arsenal’s 4-0 win over PSV on Wednesday.

David Raya backed himself to be number one at Arsenal

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Gunners boosted by Odegaard contract

12:34 , Jamie Braidwood

Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard has signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Odegaard becomes the latest young Arsenal star to sign a new deal with the club, following Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and William Saliba.

“Signing a new contract was a really easy decision for me for lots of reasons,” Odegaard said.

“Mainly what we are doing right now as a club is special, and I want to be a part of that. I’m really excited for what’s to come here. I’ve found a place where I can be really settled and call my home.

“My story is a bit different maybe, as I moved around different clubs since I was 16. At Arsenal, since the first day, I’ve felt great and this is definitely my home now.

“I just want to say thanks to everyone working at the club and of course, our fantastic supporters. I will continue to give everything to bring success to this club in the years to come.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Postecoglou promises Spurs will attack

12:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Ange Postecoglou promised Tottenham supporters they will take the game to Arsenal in his first taste of the north London derby.

Tottenham’s last league success at the Emirates was in 2010, although the most underwhelming aspect of recent displays at Arsenal has been the lack of attacking imagination with Postecoglou’s predecessors Antonio Conte, Nuno Espirito Santo and Jose Mourinho all favouring pragmatism in this match.

There appears no chance of the current Spurs head coach employing a defensive approach and the 58-year-old is excited to watch how his young group cope in a fiery atmosphere against one of the division’s best teams.

“When I went into Champions League games with Celtic or went into World Cup games with Australia, people said I should have changed my approach and we got some pretty decent lessons along the way, but I just think that’s the only way you can measure yourself,” Postecoglou explained.

“How do you know if you want to be that kind of team? That’s the question. If you want to be a team that challenges, you know you have to play that way irrespective of the opponent.

“There’s no point not using a game like Sunday as a measure to see where we’re at.”

Arsenal vs Tottenham: Arteta on ‘special rivalry’

12:11 , Jamie Braidwood

Mikel Arteta on what makes Arsenal vs Tottenham a “special rivalry”.

“It’s a rivalry in the city and I really like the derby, there’s something between the two communities and it’s really intense.

“It builds something even bigger with your supporters. I think it’s a game always in fixtures where you look straight away to see when you play that game because it’s special and there’s something emotionally attached to it so it will be a big lift if we manage to win it.

“No (better feeling than beating Tottenham) because you know what the game means to people and having the possibility in your job to make someone happy is a huge fulfilment and a responsibility we feel.

“You walk down the street and there’s a feeling (among fans) because of the history, the rivalry and that’s the beautiful thing when it’s taken in the right way during sport and we are so privileged to be involved in this sort of game.

“The atmosphere will be different. It will be more electric, there will be more energy in the ground and the pitch so we have to deal with that in the right way and take advantage of that.”

Tottenham once again have hope – but Ange Postecoglou must learn from Arsenal lesson

12:05 , Jamie Braidwood

It had taken Tottenham more than 70 days to appoint a new manager but a candidate who emerged from far down the shortlist made a flying start. He was manager of the month for August. September brought a north London derby. It went terribly and he was sacked on the first day of Novembr.

For Nuno Espirito Santo read Ange Postecoglou? Obviously not; the similarities are superficial and, unlike in 2021, there are plenty of reasons to believe a haphazard process has produced the right man.

But the fixture list does feel familiar: for the third year in a row, Tottenham visit their neighbours at this early stage of the season. It was their seventh league game last season and Antonio Conte’s previously unbeaten side lost 3-1. It was their sixth in 2021 and, after three straight wins had earned Nuno the August prize, another 3-1 reverse was a third successive defeat.

Nuno’s felt the more damning defeat, partly because Spurs were 3-0 down after 34 minutes and partly because his midfield was a mess. And yet it proved the less damaging setback; if it helped foster the impression that the Portuguese was miscast as a Tottenham manager, his departure facilitated a surge to fourth place, at Arsenal’s expense.

Two years on, Arsenal are a barometer of Postecoglou’s progress, the rivals who look like role models.

While Arsenal having 13 points after five games won’t have surprised many people, few would have put Tottenham down as having the same total at this early stage of the season.

Home advantage usually counts for a lot in the north London derby though, which is why the latest Premier League odds make Arsenal the favourites in this clash.

The Gunners have won five and drawn one of the last six Premier League meetings at the Emirates Stadium, with Spurs’ sole success at their great rivals’ home in that period occurring in the League Cup.

With that in mind, we’ve made three predictions on the game which are outlined below along with the latest odds from football betting sites.

Team news

Gabriel Martinelli remains a doubt for the north London derby having come off during Arsenal’s win over Everton last weekend before missing their midweek win against PSV Eindhoven. Elsewhere, Thomas Partey, Mohammed Elneny and Jurrien Timber remain long-term absentees.

Ivan Perisic is Spurs’ latest absentee and is likely out for the season having suffered an ACL injury this week. The Croatian joins Rodrigo Bentancur, Ryan Sessegnon and Bryan Gil on the treatment table. Giovani Lo Celso is closing in on a return after a thigh injury and could feature in some capacity this weekend.

Predicted line-ups

Arsenal XI: Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Odegaard, Rice, Havertz; Saka, Jesus, Trossard.

Tottenham XI: Vicario; Porro, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma; Kulusevski, Maddison, Son; Richarlison.

Good afternoon

Arsenal host Tottenham in an eagerly anticipated north London Derby featuring two of the Premier League’s most in-form sides.

Mikel Arteta’s side won both fixtures against their fierce rivals last year and have made an impressive start once again to this season, having won four of their first five league game and marking their return to the Champions League in midweek with a convincing 4-0 win over PSV Eindhoven.

Tottenham, however, have been revitalised under the tutelage of new manager Ange Postecoglou and are unbeaten this season in the Premier League after a superb last-ditch comeback victory over Sheffield United last weekend.
