The Old Trafford crowd is growing nervous. Despite going ahead, United have exerted no control over this game and are continuing to concede chances. Only Wolves’ poor finishing has kept the score at 1-0.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Hwang chests down a cross from the right, but he’s off-balance as he volleys towards goal and steers his effort well wide.

Sancho is involved for the first time as he cuts inside and wins a corner off Gomes. Shaw’s kick is cleared by the first defender, and Cunha is on hand to stop Sancho’s second delivery.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:33

WHAT A CHANCE! Another outstanding run from Cunha sees the Brazilian feed Hwang, whose cutback deflects into the path of Neto. He has time to pick his spot from 12 yards out, but his shot I straight at Onana. Wolves should really be ahead here!

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:32

Varane heads the corner away, but Wolves keep the attack alive and will come again.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:31

Hwang and Matheus link up on the break before the former finds Neto in space on the right. His deep cross is carried behind by Onana, and Wolves win a corner, much to the crowd’s frustration.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:30

Neto is frustrated by the decision to award United a throw-in inside their own half, and the winger picks up a yellow card for delaying the restart.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:28

Sancho, meanwhile, is on for Garnacho.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:27

Substitution Mason Tony Mount Christian Dannemann Eriksen

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:27

Wolves have created plenty of promising situations on the break here. Ait-Nouri is the latest to charge through the middle of the park, but Varane cuts out his cross before Hwang sends a wild effort off-target.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:26

Having gone unbeaten in their first four Premier League meetings with United following their return to the top flight in 2018 (W1 D3), Wolves have lost five of their last six against the Red Devils. They’ve performed admirably so far here – can they go on to claim a point, or perhaps all three?

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:25

Neto’s delivery finds Cunha, but he gets his header all wrong and sends it bouncing well wide of Onana’s goal.

21:24

Hwang’s first involvement sees him hold up the ball near the touchline before being wiped out by Wan-Bissaka. The right-back is fortunate to escape a yellow card, but United will have to defend a wide free-kick from the Wolves left.

21:23

Hwang takes Sarabia’s place alongside Cunha in the Wolves attack.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:22

Wolves are about to turn to their bench for the first time. Hwang is receiving instructions and will enter the fray imminently. We’re past the hour-mark and O’Neil’s men are still holding their own.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:21

Garnacho wins a corner on the right for United, from which Fernandes goes short to the Argentine. He steps inside and blasts a wild effort all the way through the box and wide.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:19

Wolves’ corner almost finds Dawson at the back post, but United nervously clear the lines. The hosts break through Rashford, and Garnacho eventually blasts a long-range effort over the crossbar.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:18

Wolves’ corner comes to nothing, but they keep the pressure on and Neto wins another set-piece by blasting the ball into Shaw’s face and behind. The left-back receives treatment before being given the all-clear to continue.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:18

Good save from Onana! Cunha is still getting plenty of joy on the break! Another fine run takes the Brazilian through the heart of midfield, before his 25-yard effort is turned around the post by Onana! That’s another warning for the Red Devils.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:15

Almost an own goal! Kilman almost turns a left-wing cross into his own net as United continue to press, but Sa is well-placed to hold onto it. This is better from the hosts.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:14

OFF THE LINE! Garnacho reaches a ball down the channel and beats the stranded Sa with a delicate lob. It looks to be dropping beneath the crossbar, but Dawson gets back t head it over his own crossbar. Great defending!

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:13

The Old Trafford crowd is trying to rouse their team as Sa mops up a ball in behind. Wolves have squandered some glorious chances here – will they live to regret them?

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:10

CUNHA HITS THE POST! What a let-off for United! Matheus charges forward from his own half before picking out Sarabia. His low cross finds its way to Cunha at the far post, but with Onana stranded, the Brazilian side-foots against the post and behind. Wolves should be 1-0 up!

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:09

Lindelof’s half-time introduction is surely more evidence, if it was needed, that Maguire’s United career is over. The displaced captain continues to watch on from the bench, as rumours swirl that he could be joining David Moyes’ West Ham soon.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:06

Neto puts the afterburners on to beat Shaw and reach the byline, where his cutback is smothered behind by Onana. Sarabia floats the corner in, but United stand firm to clear their lines.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:05

Wolves kick off for the second half at Old Trafford. Can either team find a winner?

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

21:05

Ten Hag makes a half-time substitution as Lindelof replaces Martinez. The Argentine was booked early on and has looked nervous throughout, so that change makes sense for United.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:55

Despite enjoying over 60 per cent of the possession, United have managed just one shot on target and 16 touches inside the Wolves area. The Red Devils have looked very disjointed so far, and there is surely more to come in the second half.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:54

Simon Hooper blows the half-time whistle and it remains goalless between Manchester United and Wolves. Despite all the pre-match noise, the visitors have given as good as they’ve got here, with Cunha and Sarabia both going close to finding the bottom corner on the break. O’Neil will be delighted with Wolves’ tenacity and organisation, with Sa’s routine save to deny Rashford the closest United have come to an opener. Ten Hag will demand much more after the interval.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:50

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 0-0 WOLVES.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:49

Wide! Mount’s delivery is good, but Varane sends an awkward header wide at the back post. The Frenchman was just stretching for that, and he failed to make a strong connection.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:49

Wolves almost play themselves into trouble! A loose pass allows Rashford to break in behind, but newly-appointed skipper Kilman matches him stride-for-stride to make a last-ditch challenge, conceding a corner.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:48

We’re into two minutes of stoppage time at the end of this opening period. Unlike others across the Premier League’s opening matchday, this game has flowed very nicely.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:46

Neto capitalises on Sarabia’s hold-up play to beat four United challenges and reach the area, but Martinez eventually gets a foot in to deny Wolves a shot at goal.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:45

Yellow Card Luke Paul Hoare Shaw

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:44

Rashford is crowded out in the area before Garnacho flashes a powerful effort well wide from a tight angle on the left.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:43

United are starting to pen Wolves back a little more now, but they’re lacking fluidity in midfield. Casemiro and Mount are operating as a double pivot with Fernandes supporting Rashford, but Wolves’ backline is proving difficult to breach.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:41

Cunha breaks into the box but is denied by a wonderful challenge from Wan-Bissaka, who slides in to kick the ball off the Wolves man and out, winning a goal-kick.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:40

Rashford appeals for handball after heading Wan-Bissaka’s cross against Semedo, but the defender’s arm is in a totally natural position. United were never getting a penalty for that – the VAR check is swiftly complete.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:39

Scramble! Shaw gets up on the overlap and his cross is spilled by Sa. Garnacho and Fernandes try to turn it home only for Kilman to block near the line, but the referee eventually blows for a foul by Garnacho.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:36

Yellow Card Rayan Aït-Nouri

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:36

Wolves are winless in their last eight Premier League away games (D2 L6), losing the last four in a row by an aggregate score of 15-1. They’ve shown plenty of purpose in the opening 35 minutes here, however.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:35

JUST WIDE! Wolves are really threatening on the break! Sarabia slips it through for Cunha, who drags his shot narrowly wide of the bottom-left corner. The Old Trafford crowd is growing restless.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:34

Ait-Nouri breaks forward to win a throw-in on the left, before Casemiro escapes punishment after catching Cunha. The United midfielder was extremely fortunate not to concede the foul.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:31

We’ve passed the half-hour mark at Old Trafford, and though United are enjoying a lot of possession, they’re yet to seriously test Sa. Wolves have been combative in midfield and lively on the break.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:29

CLOSE! Cunha beats Casemiro and Martinez with ease on the break before finding Sarabia, who sees his low drive deflect narrowly wide of the bottom-right corner. Dawson heads down the resulting corner, but United clear at the second time of asking. Wolves are asking questions of their hosts.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:29

Yellow Card Mario René Junior Lemina

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:27

Great defending! Fernandes dispossesses Gomes and looks to thread a dangerous throughball into the box, but Wolves right-back Semedo chases back to make a crucial interception.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:25

Garnacho finds Shaw with a neat backheel inside the box, but Semedo gets back to cover. A deep cross then almost finds Antony at the second time of asking, but Matheus gets back to clear the danger.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:24

Rashford’s four touches is the fewest of any player on the pitch so far. United are struggling to provide their talisman with service.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:23

Wonderful feet from Ait-Nouri, who beats Casemiro and Mount to enter United’s half. He then finds Cunha, but the Brazilian is outmuscled by his compatriot Casemiro.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:21

Wolves have lost their opening league game in each of the last two seasons. They are looking to avoid starting three consecutive campaigns with a defeat, which they last did between 1988-89 and 1990-91.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:19

Yellow Card Lisandro Martínez

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:19

Garnacho looks to find Fernandes in the final third, but Dawson steps out to make a vital interception. He read that situation brilliantly.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:17

O’Neil will be relatively pleased with Wolves’ start. United have yet to get going and the visitors have almost caught them out on the break on a couple of occasions.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:16

Good strength from Wan-Bissaka to stop Cunha darting in behind. Antony is then dragged down by Ait-Nouri on halfway, and the Wolves left-back is fortunate to escape a yellow card.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:13

Good save! United create the first real opening as Rashford darts in behind, but Sa closes the angle and smothers his shot from the right-hand side of the box. That’s better from United after a slow start from the hosts.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:12

Action at both ends as Sarabia’s cutback is cleared ahead of Neto, and United’s subsequent break is stopped by Cunha, who races back to stop Garnacho’s advance.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:11

Antony drives inside to find Garnacho, but Lemina is on hand to make a fine challenge on the edge of his own box as Wolves clear the danger.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:10

No team has won their opening Premier League game more often than Manchester United (20), though the Red Devils have started two of the last three campaigns with a loss. They lost at home to Brighton in their first game of last season, and last lost their opening league game in consecutive campaigns in 1972-73 and 1973-74.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:09

Mount’s delivery is punched clear by Sa, before the referee blows for a foul on a Wolves defender.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:09

A heavy challenge from Sarabia catches Garnacho, and United win a free-kick. Mount looks to dart onto Casemiro’s pass following the set-piece, and Kilman clears behind for a corner.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:06

We’re seeing two sides with very different aims here. While United’s fans are desperate to see them close the gap to rivals Manchester City, most Wolves supporters would surely take a repeat of last term’s 13th-placed finish after a chaotic few months.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:05

Wolves attack for the first time as Semedo sees a shot deflect towards the corner flag. Sarabia lets it run out of play, thinking it came off a red shirt last, but the referee points for a United goal-kick.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:03

A loose United pass almost allows Neto in, but Garnacho gets back to steal possession before getting United moving forwards.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

20:02

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

19:50

There are no new faces in the Wolves lineup, with the returning Doherty named among the substitutes. Gomes and Lemina will have to step up in midfield following the departure of club captain Neves, while Sarabia, Matheus and Neto will hope to provide the creativity. Cunha gets the nod up front, with Silva and Kalajdzic among O’Neil’s options on the bench.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

19:50

Ten Hag hands full debuts to new recruits Onana and Mount, though Hojlund is expected to miss the first few weeks of the campaign. Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

Wolves, meanwhile, have endured a less-than-ideal pre-season, with big-name players including Ruben Neves moving on and a lack of incomings causing Julen Lopetegui to quit as head coach on the eve of the new campaign. Former Bournemouth boss Gary O’Neil oversees his first game at the helm here, knowing a positive performance is required after a difficult few weeks at Molineux.

Manchester United vs Wolverhampton Wanderers

19:34

Erik ten Hag enters his second season in the Old Trafford dugout, looking to build on an encouraging 2022-23 campaign, which brought a third-placed Premier League finish and an end to United’s six-year trophy drought. While the club’s takeover saga rumbles on and discontent with the Glazers’ ownership remains, the signings of Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund have lifted the mood at Old Trafford – can the Red Devils maintain that by starting the season strongly?
