Who the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ still want before the transfer deadline

15:30 , Mike Jones

Ivan Toney looks set to be the big target in the remaining days of what could be the most frantic transfer window yet, as all of the Premier League’s old so-called “big six” will be seeking major deals right up to the close of the market on Friday night.

The situation has been influenced by the influx of Saudi Pro League money, which has caused every Premier League club to delay and disrupt their plans, including Manchester City who usually have all their business done by now. They are likely to get a deal done for Wolves’ Matheus Nunes, although the player’s willingness to go on strike – sensing a rare opportunity as City cast around for other attacking players – could make it go very late.

Manchester United meanwhile want a midfielder – preferably Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat, possibly Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg or Bayern Munich’s Ryan Gravenberch – and a temporary left-back due to Luke Shaw’s injury. The Old Trafford hierarchy have been in talks with a series of clubs over potential deals, from Lyon’s Nicolas Tagliafico to Barcelona’s Marcos Alonso.

Wolves agree verbal agreement with Man City for Nunes

14:42 , Mike Jones

In a separate but adjacent move City midfielder Tommy Doyle is likely to be loaned the other way with an option to buy included at £5m plus a significant sell-on clause.

Wolves view the proposed transfer for Nunes as being worth a higher amount to them because it would be financed to ensure the money is received up front and they expect City to pay interest which equates to about £6m.

If the proposal is formalised, both players will be granted permission to travel for medicals.

Cancelo’s move to Barcelona on hold

14:36 , Mike Jones

Barcelona have finalised a deal with Manchester City to sign full-back Joao Cancelo but the move has been delayed just two days before the transfer window shuts.

Late on Monday, Cancelo was at Lisbon airport ready to fly to Barcelona but was told not the club could not yet afford to complete his loan from Man City.

The 29-year-old has been staying in Lisbon for over a week with City’s permission as a source from Barcelona claims the situation has been caused by a delay in receiving funds from a commercial agreement reached earlier this month.

However, the German company involved, Libero Football Finance, says Barca requested a change in the agreement, and that it does not believe there has been a delay in the payment.

Barca president Joan Laporta and club treasurer Ferran Olive are reportedly preparing to sign a bank guarantee, putting their personal wealth at risk, that will provide the club with an injection of €20m.

It would be the third bank guarantee Barca executives have arranged in this way over the last 12 months.

The Spanish champions need to improve their finances to meet La Liga’s rules on salary spending and as it stands, they cannot sign full-back Cancelo nor can they fully register their squad making some players ineligible to play.

“He’s trained really well,” Martin said in a press conference, “There are three scenarios really: we keep Che, we lose Che and we replace him, or we keep Che and we add someone else too.

“The club who came [Everton] have gone away now. We can’t lose Che Adams and not replace him – it’d be madness.”

Liverpool cool off interest in Cheick Doucoure

14:18 , Mike Jones

Crystal Palace’s £70m price tag for Cheick Doucoure is said to be enough to fend off any interest after Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain enquired over the midfielder earlier in the summer.

Liverpool and PSG both approached Palace to register their interest in the 23-year-old defensive midfielder who joined the Eagles last year from Lens for an initial £21m.

The Reds have remained interested in potential bringing him to Anfield after missing out to Chelsea in their attempts to sign Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

Reports now say that Jurgen Klopp’s side have no intention of submitting a formal bid for Mali international Doucoure thanks to the high price set by the Eagles.

The Gunners have knocked back an initial approach from the Blues and it seems unlikely the 23-year-old will move across London due to how loved he is with the Arsenal fans.

Points can’t mask Manchester United’s muddled start to Erik ten Hag’s second season

12:30 , Mike Jones

Manchester United have made worse starts to seasons than this and won titles. But Manchester United have also made a worse start to this season than the table suggests. Early as August is, every week has come to assume seismic proportions for them.

In the space of seven days, they lost both standing and the prospect of Mason Greenwood’s return in the resolution to a damaging episode. They lost to Tottenham and, after what Erik ten Hag termed a “horror start”, threatened to lose to Nottingham Forest. They lost Mason Mount and Luke Shaw; taking Raphael Varane off on Saturday was a precautionary measure, but the Frenchman may yet join them on the injury list.

The next seven days, besides the end of a transfer window in which United have come to look in need of further reinforcements, brings things to shape a season: Carabao Cup and Champions League draws that can determine their destiny, a trip to Arsenal that feels still more of a marker after defeat at Spurs and considering their struggles away from home against the best last season.

For their part, Barcelona have been keen to offload Lenglet, with his wages thought to be among the larger burdens on the club’s finances.

Tyrone Mings damaged his knee ligaments in the opening day defeat to Newcastle and is expected to miss the majority of the season so head coach Unai Emery is looking for defensive cover.

Villa have Ezri Konsa, Diego Carlos, Pau Torres and Calum Chambers at their disposal but Lenglent would add experience, versatility and stability to the back line should a deal get finalised.

He can provide cover as a left-sided centre back and has experience in European competition with Villa close to reaching the Europa Conference League group stages.

The England international and his understudy are both expected to be out for at least two months meaning Alvaro Fernandez is the only ture left-back at Erik ten Hag’s disposal.

There is cover with Diogo Dalot able to play on the opposite side of the pitch and Ten Hag can always switch up his formation to make up for the weakness in that area of the pitch yet the first aim is to sign a recognised left-back before the deadline.
