Milton Keynes Dons v Bradford City: Kevin McDonald on his biggest selection call so far

The Scot has impressed many onlookers with his decision-making in his four matches in charge thus far in League Two and the Papa John’s Trophy, with City winning three matches and drawing the other.

The 34-year-old, who joined the club on a two-year playing contract in the summer, has selected himself just once so far in the Trophy win at Grimsby.

In his three league games at the helm, McDonald has decided to take a watching brief and not include himself on the substitutes’ bench for the appointments against Swindon, AFC Wimbledon and Wrexham.

That might just change with Richie Smallwood and Jamie Walker both suspended for tonight’s trip to Buckinghamshire.

The likes of Clarke Oduor, pictured inset, and Daniel Oyegoke could come into the equation for MacDonald and there’s always himself as well.

He said: “I might need to, but we’ll have to wait and see.

“I took myself away from playing to a certain extent.

“But this is something we’ll have to think about and see what the best options are for us.

“There are a couple out suspended, Richie and Jamie, so that’s two players missing who have been really good for us.

“We’ve got decisions to make, but that’s part of it. We’ve got a big squad with people on the bench and others who have missed out.”

While the decision as to whether to pick himself represents a key one for McDonald, preparing to face an opponent who have just appointed a new manager in Mike Williamson adds to the degree of difficulty this evening.

Williamson’s first game in charge ended in defeat at Accrington. He will be hoping for better fortune on his home ‘debut’ tonight.

McDonald added: “Obviously MK Dons have got a new manager and we’ll see how they are going to play and what way we’re going to set up.

“We’ll be ready for it. We’ll be at it whoever is playing, that’s for sure.”
