The Europa Conference League last 16 draw is set to take place this afternoon with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa flying the flag as the lone British team in the competition.

Uefa will conduct the draw at their headquarters in Nyon, as is custom, with the teams who progressed through the play-off round discovering which of the seeded teams they will face.

Villa, along with the likes of Club Brugge and Fiorentina, are among the seeded clubs after finishing top of Group E but could be drawn against some tricky opponents as Dutch side Ajax, Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb and Greece’s Olympiacos all came through the play-offs.

Still, with their impressive form in the Premier League this season, Villa will be confident about progressing further into the competition regardless of which side they are drawn against.

Follow the last 16 draw and reaction as Aston Villa seek to continue their European journey:

Liverpool confirm key trio ruled out of potential Premier League title decider

Liverpool have confirmed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker and Curtis Jones will be out until after next month’s international break and will therefore miss the potential Premier League title decider against Manchester City.

Jurgen Klopp’s side host the champions at Anfield on 10 March but the key trio are set to be absent for the crucial fixture, as well as being unavailable against Chelsea in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final.

The British teams will all be content with their opponents.

Rangers have undoubtably the most difficult tie against Benfica but the Portguese club bring weight and history to the fixture meaning a decent away trip for the fans and with the Scottish team top of the league at present they’ll take some confidence in the matches.

West Ham are well versed with SC Freiburg having beaten them twice in the Europa League group stages and they should prove no match for David Moyes’ side if he can get them back into form.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will be strong opponents for any of the teams left in the competition but a fixture against Sparta Prague could be the ideal scenario for Jurgen Klopp to rest a few players and allow his injury list to shorten.

Finally, Brighton face Roma. Tough test but much like Rangers they’ll be taking on a team with European pedigree and should they get through the tie then it’ll buoy them on to better things in the quarter-finals.

As we wait for some reaction to the Europa League last 16 draw, here’s what’s still to come this afternoon.

The Europa Conference League round of 16 draw takes place at Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Friday 23 February. The draw is set to commence at 12pm GMT.

It is a very similar draw to the previous one with seeded and unseeded teams drawn against each other. Aston Villa are the only British team in the competition.

The draw features 16 teams. The eight group stage winners from the Conference League group stage are seeded, and will face the knockout round play-off winners.

No side can face another team from the same national association.

Ties take place over two legs, with group winners at home in the second legs. Ties level after 180 minutes will go to extra time irrespective of the number of goals each team has scored at home and away.

If the teams still cannot be separated after the additional 30 minutes, the tie goes to a penalty shoot-out.

The draw for the Europa League last-16 is just getting started. As always there’s a recap of the group stages and the play-off round with the teams who have progressed being announced.

Fifa and Uefa face unfixable problem over multi-club ownership

10:57 , Mike Jones

Uefa and Fifa are in a stand-off over regulation on multi-club ownership, as the two biggest confederations struggle to find a solution for one of the biggest issues facing football today.

The European body are pushing for Fifa to come up with rules before next year’s inaugural Club World Cup in the USA, especially with the possibility that it could feature clubs from multiple groups. Manchester City and Chelsea are both certain to be involved, as two examples, and the former are part of one of the biggest such groups in the world as City Football Group while the London club’s owners investigating the possibility of expanding beyond the recent purchase of Strasbourg.

Fifa are at the same pushing Uefa to clarify its own rules, that have so far led to situations like Leipzig and Salzburg – both from the Red Bull group – meeting in the Europa League. That is despite the rules notionally supposed to keep such teams apart to prevent conflict of interest. The two clubs were able to prove sufficient separation, which has left a consistent question over whether the regulations are fit for purpose.

Klopp compares Liverpool comeback to Liverpool’s famous Barcelona win

10:49 , Mike Jones

Jurgen Klopp broke his promise.

A few months ago, he had vowed to stop talking about his greatest comeback, his greatest night. There can be a temptation to mention the most famous of his 472 games in charge of Liverpool, in part because it combined so many of the elements that have defined his reign.

But after another four-goal comeback, against Luton this time, he reached for the ultimate in his search for something reminiscent.

“I promised my team a few months ago that I would never mention the Barcelona game as an example and I used it again today so I broke my promise,” he said.

“Just because this game was, before the game, kind of similar. This is now their Barcelona, it was against Luton.

“Difficult situation, plenty of reasons to give up in moments but not tonight and I saw only a super group fighting. If you don’t limit yourself with bad thoughts you can fly, that’s what the boys did.”

Mohamed Salah faces a late fitness test ahead of the Carabao Cup final with the Liverpool forward yet to have been ruled out of the Wembley clash against Chelsea.

Darwin Nunez and Dominik Szoboszlai will also be assessed ahead of Sunday’s showpiece.

“Dom, Darwin and Mo we have to really see,” Liverpool’s assistant manager Pep Lijnders said. “We have two more days, so at the last minute we will check if they can be there.”

How does the Europa Conference League draw work?

The ECL last 16 draw takes place in exactly the same way as the Europa League one.

No side can face another team from the same national association.

Ties take place over two legs, with group winners at home in the second legs. Ties level after 180 minutes will go to extra time irrespective of the number of goals each team has scored at home and away.

Amid Liverpool injury concerns, one thing is keeping trophy hopes alive

10:07 , Mike Jones

At the start of this season, Liverpool’s back-up stopper still had more years to his name than senior appearances for the club. While that’s not too much of an issue for youngsters making their way in the game, Caoimhin Kelleher isn’t really a youth candidate any longer: even in goalkeeper terms, 25 years old is pushing towards mid-career territory and with Alisson Becker ahead of him at Anfield, regular minutes have always been hard to come by.

But this season has been slightly different. A start at Brentford on short notice, after the Brazilian suffered an apparent hamstring injury on the eve of the game, brought Kelleher up to 14 appearances for the campaign, 35 for the club overall.

It’s easily his best season in terms of game time, but also for consistency of performances, with Jurgen Klopp describing his showing in the 4-1 win at the Gtech Community Stadium as “exceptional”.

Moyes defiant as fan pressure mounts on West Ham boss

09:40 , Mike Jones

David Moyes is coming under pressure from West Ham fans who would like to see more exciting football from the team amid a run of poor results.

The manager was staunch in his own defence and reminded fans of what he has achieved at the London Stadium including the fact the Hammers won the European Conference League last season.

“I am pretty long in the tooth, you can never please everybody, it would be hard to say there have been many better times at West Ham,” he said.

“Maybe they want something different, but they would honestly have to say it has been the best times they have had at the club with regards winning a European trophy, the league positions.

“Maybe there would be managers who excite them more, possibly, but the one who is sitting here wins more.

“My response would be to say we are hurting really badly as a team and a manager because we have not had good results for five or six weeks now but this year already we have beaten Tottenham, Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal, we must not forget there were good times not so long ago.

“We have not been playing well, but there are some mitigating circumstances since January 1, with boys going to the African Cup of Nations, Jarrod Bowen came back from England with an injury and has not been the same since, we have been without Lucas Paqueta as well for most of the time so there are things that have affected us.

“I have seen other teams have similar, Newcastle, Man Utd, Man City before the World Championship, Arsenal over Christmas.

“There is no divine right that West Ham don’t have a dicky period at some point in the season. We are hoping we can get back on it.”

Jurgen Klopp compares Liverpool’s ‘thunderstorm’ win over Luton with famous comeback against Barcelona

08:47 , Jack Rathborn

Jurgen Klopp broke his promise. A few months ago, he had vowed to stop talking about his greatest comeback, his greatest night. There can be a temptation to mention the most famous of his 472 games in charge of Liverpool, in part because it combined so many of the elements that have defined his reign. “I promised my team a few months ago that I would never mention the Barcelona game as an example and I used it again today so I broke my promise,” he said. “Just because this game was, before the game, kind of similar.”

It is not often Luton Town find themselves bracketed with Barcelona. It was the shared sense of adversity that prompted Klopp to make the comparison. He likes the idea of limitless possibilities, of making the improbable possible and then actual. Liverpool were underdogs against Barcelona and they definitely were not against Luton, they trailed by three goals to Lionel Messi and co and just one to Carlton Morris and his colleagues, but these were Liverpool sides with a difference, both depleted by injury.

Xabi Alonso has ‘nothing new to say’ about Liverpool and Bayern Munich links

08:40 , Jack Rathborn

Bayer Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso has insisted there is “nothing new to say” regarding fresh speculation over his future.

Alonso has been heavily linked with the Liverpool job since Jurgen Klopp announced last month he would step down at the end of the campaign, but the Premier League club now face competition from Bayern Munich.

It was revealed on Wednesday that current Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel will leave his position at the conclusion of the season – increasing the scrutiny on Alonso.
