Surreal brilliance of Jonny Evans hands Manchester United a much-needed victory

22:22 , Sonia Twigg

There are times when Manchester United have seemed weighed down by their past, unable to escape the burden of their history. And yet when Erik ten Hag’s team had made the club’s worst start to a season for 37 years, since Ron Atkinson entered a spiral that prompted them to turn to a certain Scottish manager, a throwback to Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign turned unlikely saviour.

It is 16 years since Jonny Evans’ United debut, 14 since he first lined up for them at Turf Moor. It was eight-and-a-half since his previous United start. His return had seemed a move so nostalgic that even Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might not have contemplated it. His selection seemed a case of desperation, not inspiration.

Report from Richard Jolly at Turf Moor.

Erik ten Hag: “I think team spirit was the big thing.

“It’s about winning and the last week was a lot against us but you have to turn that and it’s just up to us, the team acknowledge this and we have seen the answer on the pitch.

“It was a brilliant goal, and very good on the pitch.

“We have seen so many things in the last couple of weeks against us, and we have so many injuries but we have to deal with it.”

Evans continued: “I loved every minute of it. before the game, I just couldn’t wait, and coming up today on the bus I was just buzzing.

“It was an absolute honour and one of the best nights of my life.”

He added: “I never thought – you know what it’s like when you get to a certain age, you’re winding down your career – but there was no other option for me. So I came back in and thankfully my body has seen me through.

“I think for me in the time I’ve been here is just observing and see how they play as it’s different than my previous club so just take my time.”

On starting in the future: “The role that was made out to me was coming in as cover, so I had to fill the gap so for me it was just about trying to be ready.”

FT: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

22:02 , Sonia Twigg

Jonny Evans also spoke to the broadcaster, saying: “It was massive, I think we’ve had a tough couple of games. This is a tough place to come.

You want to be successful and you want to win games but you have to keep a clean sheet.

“Obviously when you hit this age you think about winding down a bit but it was a great moment for me personally and it couldn’t have gone any better.”

FT: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

Bruno Fernandes said to TNT Sports: “It was a great pass (from Evans), I know he has a great quality playing the ball in behind. I was waiting for him, it was tough to get behind them, but it was a great ball and a great finish and good to get the win.

“We knew that we could come from this, I think we’ve been a little bit unlucky but the performance wasn’t the best.

“Today we showed great spirit, I think with Burnley the points they have doesn’t show the quality they have.

“We are really happy with the points.”

Stay tuned for post-match reaction from both teams after Manchester United beat Burnley 1-0 at Turf Moor.

FT: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

90+5 mins: The final chance of the game, and it’s fired straight at Onana by Manuel, that will be the final kick of the game.

Overall it was not a thrilling encounter, but it has eased the pressure on Manchester United after a moment of individual brilliance from Bruno Fernandes was enough to give his side all three points.

Yellow card! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:54 , Sonia Twigg

90+3 Beyer is shown a yellow card for a cynical foul.

Burnley have put a lot into this game with no reward, but they have had their opportunities just without being clinical in the opposition box.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:53 , Sonia Twigg

90+3 Trafford has to make a save to deny Fernandes, who did really well to get anything on that and send it towards the goal, but Burnley can’t get hold of the ball as United have been good in the closing stages.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:51 , Sonia Twigg

90+1 mins: There will be a minimum of four minutes added time at the end of the match at Turf Moor.

Substitution: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:49 , Sonia Twigg

89’ Benson snatches at that and has to resort to a shot from distance.

Evans off for debutant Amrabat, who was signed towards the end of the transfer window.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:46 , Sonia Twigg

86’ Burnley are running out of time to find an equaliser here while United have looked relatively comfortable.

There’s one final roll of the dice from Kompany, Brownhill is off for Manuel.

Chance!Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:45 , Sonia Twigg

84’ Rodriguez makes a lovely move into the box but as he is turning, he misses the ball and United are able to clear behind.

The corner is booted clear, but there’s just Rashford at the other end and as Burnley scarper back, the defenders are able to block the English forward’s shot.

Chance! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:43 , Sonia Twigg

82’ Burnley continue to attack, they have a corner and they’re not out of this yet!

Onana came for it, didn’t get there, but Berge who jumped up well just didn’t time it brilliantly and it bounces off his shoulder and over the goal.

Substitution: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:41 , Sonia Twigg

79’ Sub, Reguilon off for Varane, and ten Hag and the Manchester United fans will be hoping it’s not another injury to add to their already extensive list.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:38 , Sonia Twigg

77’ Brunn Larsen involved again, Manchester United get the foul inside their own box, but Burnley have looked brighter and chosen to make runs in behind the backline and play the ball through rather than crossing from the wings as they did before the subs.

Burnley have had 90 percent possession in the last five minutes.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:36 , Sonia Twigg

75’ The changes worked almost immediately! But Brunn Larsen’s touch was just a bit too heavy and the angle was closed by the defender and Onana.

A good run and a slight spark of life.

United perhaps surprisingly have not threatened at all really since their first half goal.

Substitutions: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:34 , Sonia Twigg

72’ Burnley are struggling to create in the final third, but have won a free kick, and it is time for the changes.

Ramsey off for Berge, Amdouni off for Rodríguez and Koleosho off for Bruun Larsen.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:29 , Sonia Twigg

69’ Manchester United have been far from perfect, but they also haven’t needed to be.

It was a stroke of quality and genius for Fernandes’ volley that gave his side the lead, and they haven’t had to work too hard to hold on to their slender advantage.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:28 , Sonia Twigg

67’ Lindelof was needed there to clear the ball behind, but again for Burnley, as the cross comes in there is no player in the centre of the box, it’s just looking like they are lacking a centre forward.

The following corner was poor and headed away easily at the near post.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:26 , Sonia Twigg

66’ Burnley have another ball looped in towards the box, but Onana is again able to gather easily. They’re just struggling slightly now to find a way back into the game.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:24 , Sonia Twigg

64’ McTominay had a shot from distance after Burnley tried to clear their lines, but it was always wide of the target.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:23 , Sonia Twigg

63’ Slightly worrying for Burnley fans here as they have struggled to create anything clear-cut and have just started to look to punt it forwards as the game enters the final half hour.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:21 , Sonia Twigg

61’ There’s a great break from Tresor down the right, but he has to delay the final pass with no one in the box and when the cross does come in Onana is able to come and gather without being under any real pressure.

Chance! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:20 , Sonia Twigg

59’ Al Dakhil was in the perfect place and made the best challenge to prevent Hojland having a tap in!

The Burnley defender tracked his man well and made the right decision to hook the ball clear away from the United forward from what would have been a great goalscoring opportunity.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:19 , Sonia Twigg

59’ Burnley are being forced to play backwards, there has been some nice approach play but just four goals in four games and you can see why tonight – the finishing touch just hasn’t been there.

Yellow card! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:17 , Sonia Twigg

56’ That was slightly idiotic from Reguilon given the new rules, he calls for a yellow card for the Burnley man and receives one himself in return…

Yellow card! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:15 , Sonia Twigg

55’ It looks very odd on the possession stats, but United have the lead and look content to not have the ball.

Koleosho has gone into the referee’s book for a foul on Casemiro.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:14 , Sonia Twigg

53’ Burnley being allowed time on the ball here, as Erik ten Hag’s men just sit back in their own half, but there are slight chances, as when the ball does come forward United’s defence has not been the most clinical.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:11 , Sonia Twigg

51’ Burnley lucky! Dalot fizzes a ball across the face of the box, but there is no player on the end of that, if someone had been there it would have been quite a straightforward tap-in.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:11 , Sonia Twigg

50’ Dalot has a throw-in in a dangerous area, and it takes Burnley a few goes to clear, but in the end Ramsey has conceded a throw-in almost at the corner.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:10 , Sonia Twigg

49’ Not much to talk about so far in the second half, there has been a slight lack of urgency from both teams after a busy opening 30 seconds or so.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:08 , Sonia Twigg

48’ Both sides just settling down into the second half here. United with the advantage.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:06 , Sonia Twigg

46’ Burnley off the mark straight away and chasing down everything, they’ve clearly had a talking to at half time from manager Kompany, although the fans are a bit more subdued after the goal.

Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

21:05 , Sonia Twigg

46’ And the second half is underway, Manchester United with the kick off.

Paul Robinson was gushing about Fernandes’ strike on BBC 5Live at half time, saying: “We have seen one of the goals of the season already tonight there from Bruno Fernandes.

“I can’t tell you how hard that technique is to execute. The ball comes from Evans inside the centre circle, on an angle, and Fernandes watches it all the way onto his right foot.

“He doesn’t try to take it down or even take a touch, he hits it first time on the volley, smashing it past James Trafford. Nothing the Burnley keeper could do with it, a fantastic strike!”

HT: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

49’ Hojland was just offside there, fortunately for Burnley his shot was over the bar, but they might be slightly concerned at the space opening up for United who have the lead after a stunning goal from Bruno Fernandes.

Just the one goal separates the sides, but Burnley have also had opportunities at the other end, including hitting the post

GOAL: Fernandes! Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

20:47 , Sonia Twigg

45 + 1 mins: Evans has picked out Fernandes with a perfect pass and the technique to finish was just perfect.

Fernandes drops into the space between the left back and centre back, hits it first time on the volley into the far corner, and there is nothing Burnley or goalkeeper Trafford can do anything about that.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:44 , Sonia Twigg

44’ Every time Onana takes his time the boos ring out from the Burnley fans, they are up for this and could consider themselves unlucky not to see their team ahead in this match, despite the disallowed VAR goal.

Save! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:43 , Sonia Twigg

42’ Save! Onana is in the right place as Ramsey take a half-yard to have the space to try and bend it around Lindelof and into the goal.

It was struck well but straight at the goalkeeper, who parried it into the ground before claiming it at the second attempt.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:40 , Sonia Twigg

40’ Burnley have continued looking dangerous, and played the ball very well around the box, but the final ball trying to pick out Brownhill was just cleared by United.

They have taken their time to find the killer pass but it hasn’t quite been there so far.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:39 , Sonia Twigg

38’ Koleosho has a half chance from just outside the box, but it’s dragged wide, not sure he ever had quite the time and space to be able to bend it towards goal.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:37 , Sonia Twigg

36’ Burnley are up for this and quick to close down any attempt to get forward by the visitors.

As they did earlier on, Onana’s long kicks have been the most promising from a United perspective.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:35 , Sonia Twigg

35’ Burnley have had the youngest average starting XI in the Premier League this season, with an average of 24 years, but they have held their own against United.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:33 , Sonia Twigg

33’ Burnley have another chance with a short corner, fizzed in by Tresor and headed behind by a United defender.

Burnley have continued to push and look dangerous.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:31 , Sonia Twigg

30’ Yet another foul given away by Manchester United, but this one is in Burnley’s half.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:30 , Sonia Twigg

29’ After that decision by VAR, the Burnley supporters are cheering everything from their side and the atmosphere has just stepped up a notch or two.

GOAL DISALLOWED! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:28 , Sonia Twigg

27’ That has been disallowed, and the score remains 0-0. It was a fairly straightforward decision, with Trafford definitely impeded as the header came in from Evans.

VAR goal check: Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

20:27 , Sonia Twigg

26’ There is a debate over whether Trafford is being impeded by a Manchester United player standing right in front of him, the referee has gone over to the monitor…

GOAL! Jonny Evans scores. Burnley 0-1 Manchester United

20:26 , Sonia Twigg

26’ Jonny Evans has headed United into the lead, he was completely unmarked there, but has got his return to the side off to a flyer.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:25 , Sonia Twigg

24’ The stats make a bit of a bleak reading for those supporting the Manchester side, Burnley have 135 completed passes to United’s 75.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:23 , Sonia Twigg

23’ When United have managed to get forward, they have committed in numbers, with Burnley looking to hit them back quickly and exploit the gaps.

But unfortunately for the home side, United just have a little bit more pace.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:22 , Sonia Twigg

22’ Just a small tactical change by Kompany, with Tresor and Koleosho swapping wings.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:20 , Sonia Twigg

20’ That substitution has now happened

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:19 , Sonia Twigg

18’ Burnley could be about to make a very early subsitution, inside the first 20 minutes with Tresor preparing to come on for Gudmundsson, who has been struggling a little bit so far.

Post! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:18 , Sonia Twigg

17’ Burnley will be disappointed not to be in the lead there!

It was a lovely move, and they have grown into this game so far.

Koleosho was free in the box and just tried to pick out the far post, but the ball rebounded back off the post and United had a stroke of luck.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:16 , Sonia Twigg

15’ It looks like both sides are trying to open up space and break quickly.

But worryingly for Manchester United they have started to give away slightly cynical fouls inside their own half, with Burnley players getting away from them a bit too easily.

Yellow card! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:14 , Sonia Twigg

13’ At times it looks like Burnley are playing a slightly dangerous game trying to play the ball out from the box, but it has worked so far.

They attack, and win a free kick on the left hand side, with Dalot forced into making a foul on Koleosho and he receives a yellow card.

Save! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:12 , Sonia Twigg

9’ Onana is called into action for the first time in the match to make a save from the header!

The ball came down the right and Amdouni heads the ball into the ground and goalwards but the Manchester United goalkeeper was there.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:10 , Sonia Twigg

9’ Other than that one quick break by Manchester United, this game is far from what you would call fast paced.

Burnley have done a lot of just playing the ball around inside their half under little pressure.

Save! Burnley 0-0 Manchester United.

20:08 , Sonia Twigg

7’ Manchester United win the ball in midfield and drive through straight away, the tempo just increased rapidly and Rashford was able to take a shot, but Trafford was able to palm the ball away and keep the scores level.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:06 , Sonia Twigg

6’ Erik ten Hag just looking on in a black coat there – perhaps symbolising all the problems surrounding the club at the moment, both on and off the field.

Burnley have yet to test the slightly makeshift Manchester United backline with Evans in the centre of defence.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

20:04 , Sonia Twigg

4’ Burnley are just sitting off Manchester United when they have the ball, but the visitors are struggling to get the ball up-field, and have slightly relied on a long long kick from Onana to drive the attack.

Burnley 0-0 Manchester United

2’ Burnley are just being forced backward and there’s a lot of early energy from Manchester United who are playing in all white

Bruno Fernandes threw his support behind Andre Onana and told the devastated Manchester United goalkeeper to stop blaming himself for the Champions League defeat at Bayern Munich.

Having been beaten in three of their first five matches for the first time in the Premier League era, the Red Devils’ return to European football’s top table ended in a 4-3 loss on Wednesday night. Erik ten Hag’s men started the Group A opener surprisingly well at the Allianz Arena, only for summer signing Onana to somehow let a low Leroy Sane shot squirm home.

Erik Ten Hag insists Manchester United are fighting together to try to turn their season around.

The Red Devils have lost four of their first six matches, with Wednesday’s 4-3 defeat by Bayern Munich in the Champions League following a 3-1 reversal against Brighton, leaving Ten Hag embattled little over a month into the new campaign.

The Dutchman said: “It’s my second year. I know it’s not always only going up, you will have your gaps and you get stronger from it as long as you stay together, and that’s what we’re doing.

The task for every subsequent Manchester United manager has been to emulate Sir Alex Ferguson. Erik ten Hag did it twice in a night. Neither was cause for celebration. When Serge Gnabry scored Bayern Munich’s second goal, it was the first time since Ferguson’s team of 2001 that United had conceded twice in five successive games. When Mathys Tel added a late fourth, it meant the class of 2023 became the second United side to let in four goals in a Champions League game: the first was Ferguson’s 1994 group, when eviscerated by Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona ‘Dream Team’.

Burnley v Manchester United team news:

There is some very surprising news from Manchester United, with 35-year-old Jonny Evans named in the starting line-up.

He is not the only surprise however, with Hannibal Mejbri and Scott McTominay also selected by Erik ten Hag.

There is no place in the squad for Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez or Mason Mount.

Sofyan Amrabat is on the bench and could make his debut.

Jadon Sancho is seemingly been frozen out at Manchester United after he took to social media to claim he has been made a “scapegoat” for poor results.

Erik ten Hag admits he is at a loss to explain Manchester United’s poor defensive performances.

The Red Devils have conceded 14 goals in their last five games and 10 in the last three, with three goals against Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday not enough even to earn them a point.

United boss Ten Hag said: “We have shown that we can do it because last year we had the most clean sheets in the Premier League because of the team, because we defended very good as a team, so we have to get back to that standard.

09:38 , Karl Matchett

Saturday’s late kick off sees two teams desperately in need of a win clash at Turf Moor as Burnley host Manchester United in the Premier League.

Vincent Komany’s Clarets have endured a difficult return to the top-flight with three losses from their opening four games though they did manage to hold on for a draw against Nottingham Forest last time out.

United, meanwhile, have lost three matches in a row following their predictable 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday. Erik ten Hag is dealing up a growing list of injuries to his first team squad and will see today’s encounter as the chance to change the fortunes of his team.

The Red Devils are already eight points behind league leaders Manchester City and need to put together a run of positive results to propel them up the table.
