Manchester United slumped to a third consecutive defeat after a promising start to their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.
Christian Eriksen should have opened the scoring inside the first five minutes only to be denied by a sharp save from Sven Ulreich. A howler from Andre Onana then gave the hosts the opening goal and they continued to flow on a strange night in Munich.
Leroy Sane added a second before the break and Rasmus Hojlund netted his first goal for United to give them hope of a comeback after the restart.
Eriksen was harshly judged to have handled the ball which led a a penalty that Harry Kane dispatched with ease. Casemiro then score twice – either side of a Mathys Tel rocket – but United couldn’t rescue a draw.

Football, bloody hell, as Sir Alex Ferguson famously exclaimed after an action-packed finale against Bayern Munich. Manchester United had the final say again, Casemiro’s second goal meaning they got three in the Allianz Arena. Yet on a night of some surreal developments, there was a certain predictability, too. Of course Harry Kane scored. Bayern Munich bought him to be reassuringly reliable. Of course United lost, too, because that felt a guarantee for a team with an acute self-destructive streak and even as they can savour the fact that the striker they did get instead of Kane, Rasmus Hojlund, opened his account.
But as United’s third successive defeat was a tale of three summer signings, the notion it would come down to Kane against Hojlund, the master and the apprentice of goalscoring, overlooked United’s increasingly acute goalkeeping issue. While United named three goalkeepers on their bench, the problem was the one they had on the Allianz Arena pitch. Andre Onana was a Champions League finalist last season and arguably the outstanding shot-stopper in the competition. If Erik ten Hag thought he was buying a guarantee of their own, a Kane of goalkeeping, the Cameroonian marred his United bow in the competition with a horrible error, gifting Leroy Sane the opener and Bayern a path to a victory that, despite United’s three goals, rarely felt in doubt thereafter.

Manchester United were made to suffer in Germany after a promising start to their Champions League opener against Bayern Munich.

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has admitted that his error cost his side in their 4-3 loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League.
Erik Ten Hag’s side had started the game well, but fell behind in the 28th minute when Leroy Sané’s tame effort from outside of the box was palmed in by the United goalkeeper.
The drawback deflated the away side, who quickly conceded a second when Jamal Musiala’s brilliant play led to him teeing up Serge Gnabry to cooly slot home.
“It’s difficult. We started very good. After my mistake we lost control of the game,” Onana told TNT Sports following the match.

Casemiro battled from a lofted ball to guide home the ball on his left foot, but United again looked frail shortly after scoring when 18-year old Mathys Tel cooly finished past Onana.
A whipped in free-kick from Fernandes was touched home again by Casemiro, and was enough to send United into the second leg only a single goal down.
Bayern were the better team for the majority of the game and looked dominant, but the result is better than many would have expected for a Manchester United side in poor form and with several key defensive injuries.

He returns tonight as manager of Manchester United knowing that a victory could turnaround the fortunes of his team. He was asked how it felt to return to Bayern to which he responded:
“It is great and this is a great place. A historical club and a club that has as big achievements as Manchester United does so when those two institutes face each other, it is a great match. Everyone has a look at it and it is really enjoyable to be part of it.

It was an early reminder of what Manchester United could have had. Or, more pertinently, who they could have had. For years, there was a certain irresistible logic to Harry Kane joining United. Instead, as Thomas Tuchel outlined: “We took the skipper of England out of England, out of the Premier League, so it is a huge deal.”
Because when Kane left Tottenham for one of the European aristocracy, it was for Bayern Munich, for a club with 10 league titles since United won their last. The vagaries of the Champions League draw may rub it in for United: Kane’s European debut for Bayern is against them. And if the serial German champions opted to send a message by putting Kane on media duties the day before the game, it was understandable.
It allowed England’s record scorer to confirm that Bayern was his first choice and, if he was never going to say anything else, that probably served a purpose for his employers anyway. “Over the summer, I know there were some talks between a few clubs in the background but Bayern was a team I was really interested by and really excited by,” Kane said. “There weren’t too many other discussions once they came in.”

Erik ten Hag is dealing with an injury crisis at Old Trafford that has seen the likes of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw and Raphael Varane all sidelined. As such, United’s defensive capabilities are not as strong as they could be which has contributed, among a plethora of other faults, to their recent poor run of form.
