Nottingham Forest demand ref Rob Jones is banned from their matches after Willy Boly farce

The Bournemouth defeat was Forest’s seventh match without a win and left them just two points off the relegation zone having played a game more than 18th-placed Luton Town, who beat Newcastle United that day.

The letter to Webb is the Midlands club’s second this season after they complained in August about the performance of referee Stuart Atwell and his officials in their 3-2 defeat at Manchester United. That game saw Atwell send off Forest captain Joe Worrall for a challenge on United captain Bruno Fernandes in the second half.

Jones was the Var that day and backed the decision by Atwell after Worrall was adjudged to have been the last man despite Boly appearing to be a covering defender.

United were also awarded a match-winning penalty when Danilo was deemed to have brought down Marcus Rashford, while the home side’s Scott McTominay was given just a yellow card for a kick towards the face of Cheikhou Kouyate.

Forest’s concerns over the performance of Attwell were understood to have stemmed from the official’s display in a Championship game against Bournemouth back in the 2021-22 season when a penalty decision went against former forward Sam Surridge after an incorrect offside call.

August’s game at Old Trafford was Attwell’s first Forest match since that fixture in May 2022.

Boly demands Var change after controversial red card

By John Percy

Nottingham Forest defender Willy Boly has called on referees to scrap rules on reviewing yellow cards after his “painful” dismissal against Bournemouth.

Boly was at the centre of one of the most controversial moments of the season when he was sent off by referee Robert Jones in Saturday’s chaotic 3-2 defeat.

The Ivory Coast international was given a second caution despite what appeared a perfectly timed challenge on Bournemouth defender Adam Smith.

Under Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) rules, Var cannot review incidents unless the offence has resulted in a straight red card, so Boly will be suspended for the Boxing Day trip to Newcastle.

Forest were furious with the decision and tweeted at half-time, with the score 0-0, that they had been “let down badly by awful decisions.”

‘Var didn’t help me… maybe they will change this’

It is understood the PGMOL are considering changes to the system next year, and Boly insists Jones made a huge mistake.

“I would be so happy if they decided to change the rules after this because this cannot be allowed to happen again,” Boly said.

“Everyone can make a mistake but the point is right now the rules are that even if they know he has made a mistake there is nothing they can do. This is the worst thing. The stakes are so high for everybody, that’s why Var is here, to help us. But Var didn’t help me and maybe in the future they will change these kind of decisions – that is the only thing I want.

“I said to the referee ‘why don’t you ask the Var because you have made a mistake’, and I was told: ‘The rules are the rules, there is nothing that I can do now.’

“It would be better for me if someone else could help him away from the pitch and study the video. I don’t understand why they can’t say to him: ‘We think you made the wrong decision, it is not a yellow card, go and take a look again.’ It is a clear and obvious error.”

Boly had already been booked earlier in the match, for a dangerous challenge on Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke.

After his dismissal in the 23rd minute, Forest conceded three goals to suffer a defeat which leaves them only two points above the relegation zone.

“It was painful for our team because we suffered after that, but what can I do? There is nothing I can do,” Boly added. “I was in our dressing room praying for our team to win and we did well actually. At the end we were a little bit tired so it became difficult for us. The last goal was painful for us but we have to show again the spirit we showed throughout this game and keep going.”
